Recipient of the 2019 American Prize in Orchestral Composition, composer Wayne Horvitz performs extensively throughout Europe, Japan, and North America. In addition to creating work for his own ensembles, he has created new work for The Kitchen, BAM, Seattle Symphony, Berlin Jazz, Nocco, Vienna Radio Orchestra, Centrum, and ACT among others. He has received awards from, MAP, McKnight Foundation, the NEA, Meet the Composer, and The Shifting Foundation. among others. Narrative works include pieces centered around the life of Joe Hill, the story of the Everett Massacre, and the poems of Richard Hugo. Installation work has been presented at Ft. Worden, SAM and Arizona State Museum of Art. He is the recipient of the 2016 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award.

Collaborators include Robin Holcomb, Bill Frisell, Reggie Watts, Butch Morris, Alex Guy, Ikue Mori, George Lewis, Steve Swallow, Yukio Suzuki, Billy Bang, Carla Bley, Eyvind Kang, John Zorn (Naked City etc.), Bill Irwin, Gus Van Sant, Paul Taylor, Beth Fleenor, Rinde Eckert, Yohei Saito, Barbara Earl Thomas, David Moss, Carey Perloff, Paul Taylor, Dayna Hanson, and Gus Van Sant. Community based performance work with choreographer Liz Lerman in Portsmouth, N.H. One month residency in Portsmouth working with local marching band, women’s choir, tap dancers and others. Composed and recorded electronic works for dancers, choral work for the choir based on Hebrew text, and two 8-10 minute pieces for marching band. All works were performed various times during the last week and all together on the Final Sunday entitled Portsmouth Pages – The Shipyard Project. 90 minute documentary for NH PBS, aired in spring 1999. Produced and performed on the Bill Frisell score for the animated television special Tales from the Far Side by cartoonist Gary Larson. Broadcast nationally on CBS in October 1994.

A sequel entitled Tales from the Far Side II has been completed and is due to be released on Fox Television in 1999.

Composed music for two Interactive CD-ROMS for Microsoft, comprising educational programs for children entitled Ancient Lives and Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs received an EMMA award for Best Sound Design for a Multimedia title (Germany, 1993).

The Wire magazine places Sara Schoenbeck in the "tiny club of bassoon pioneers" at work in contemporary music today and the New York Times has called her performances "galvanizing" and "riveting, mixing textural experiments with a big, confident sound.”

Sara promotes the bassoon as a colorful and flexible voice in both her own work and in collaboration as an improviser, interpreter and composer. She has been a member of a number of music ensembles including Anthony Braxton’s 12+1(tet) and the Tri-Centric Orchestra, Wayne Horvitz’s Gravitas Quartet with Ron Miles and Peggy Lee, the Nels Cline Lovers Orchestra, Wavefield Ensemble, Petr Kotek’s SEM ensemble, Dana Lyn’s Mother Octopus, Michael Bates’ Acrobat and the Ghost Train Orchestra. Sara has performed regularly with many inspiring artists and ensembles including Henry Threadgill, Roscoe Mitchell, Satoko Fujii, Butch Morris, Wadada Leo Smith, Matt Mitchell, Marty Ehrlich, Johnny Reinhard, the International Contemporary Ensemble, Wet Ink, the Michael Leonhart Orchestra, Adam Rudolph’s Go Organic Orchestra and Brooklyn Raga Massive, Eve Risser’s White Desert Orchestra, Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra, Vinny Golia’s Large Ensemble and Harris Eisenstadt's Golden State.

Sara can be heard on dozens of music and film recordings including The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, Spanglish and Dahmer, and on the Tzadik, Pi and Blue Note Record labels. In the fall of 2021, Sara released her self-titled debut album to critical acclaim on Pyroclastic Records, featuring nine duos with different partners; Roscoe Mitchell, Nels Cline, Robin Holcomb, Nicole Mitchell, Mark Dresser, ​Harris Eisenstadt, Matt Mitchell, Peggy Lee and Wayne Horvitz. The album was recorded in seven different locations across North America and appeared on numerous critics’ best-of-year lists.

BATTLE HYMNS & GARDENS
Battle Hymns & Gardens is Reed Wallsmith (alto saxophone, composition), Joe Cunningham (tenor saxophone, percussion, composition) and bassist Jon Shaw of the acclaimed ensemble Blue Cranes, and Tim DuRoche on drums, gongs, and little instruments. This album also features trombonist James Powers and guitarist Dan Duval augmenting the core ensemble.
Originally formed in 2007 as a free improvisation ensemble, BHaG have evolved over time into one of the more compelling units on the Portland scene, balancing original compositions by Cunningham and Wallsmith, reminiscent of the harmolodic drop-kicked joy of Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman and Loft Jazz era giants like Sam Rivers with spacious, lyrical landscapes, a la Paul Motian and Roscoe Mitchell—with a strong influence of folk-form and melody and a healthy dose of conversational interplay and humor, along for the ride.
Battle Hymns & Gardens have shared bills and/or collaborated with Tim Young, Allison Miller, Lucian Ban, Mike Gamble, Elina Duni, The Tiptons, and Elliott Sharp among others, and appeared at the Portland Jazz Festival, PDX Pop Now! fest, the Creative Music Guild’s Improvisation Summit of Portland, and The Cathedral Park Jazz Festival. They’ve also created an original scores for dance (with choreographers Tere Mathern Dance, Heidi Duckler, and Mike Barber’s Ten Tiny Dances, and live silent-film scores.

Andy Clausen is a New York-based trombonist, composer, producer, and educator.
A graduate of The Juilliard School, Andy served as principal conductor and Artistic Director for Jazz at New York Youth Symphony from 2016-2023, and in 2021 joined the faculty of The New School as an Artist in Residence and professor of trombone and composition.
As a composer, Andy has worked in a variety of formats, from orchestral and large ensemble commissions, classical and jazz chamber music projects, as well as numerous film, television, radio, and podcast productions. For more info, see projects.

Andy is a founding member of acclaimed new music brass quartet The Westerlies. The Westerlies navigate a wide array of venues and projects with the precision of a string quartet, the audacity of a rock band, and the charm of a family sing-along. “Skilled interpreters who are also adept improvisers” (NPR’s Fresh Air), The Westerlies explore jazz, roots, and chamber music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that is both "folk-like and composerly, lovely and intellectually rigorous” (NPR Music).

Since their founding in 2012, The Westerlies have produced a prolific and critically acclaimed body of chamber music recordings: their 2014 debut, Wish the Children Would Come On Home: The Music of Wayne Horvitz, a 2016 double-CD The Westerlies, the 2020 release, Wherein Lies the Good, their 2021 collaboration with vocalist Theo Bleckmann, This Land, and numerous additional digital releases, live recordings, and collaborations through their label Westerlies Music.
A passionate educator Andy has taught masterclasses at Yale, The Colburn School, The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, The New School, University of Maryland, and University of Washington, as well as hundreds of public schools across the country.

Brandon Seabrook cemented himself long ago as a pillar of the fertile Brooklyn DIY avant-garde underground, the same scene anchored by improvising guitarists such as Mary Halvorson, Ava Mendoza, and Marc Ribot. While each of those visionaries has carved out their own singular niche derived from forms of the jazz-centric idiom, Seabrook occupies sound worlds all his own. Is it jazz? Metal? Classical? Folk? Punk? It’s all of the above—usually at the same time.

Regardless, few artists have the breadth of command, hyper-speed intensity, and idiosyncratic touch on both guitar and banjo. In a word, Seabrook shreds. Albums like In The Swarm by his trio with Cooper-Moore and Gerald Cleaver, and Convulsionaries, by his strings group with Henry Fraser and Daniel Levin, are time signature–loaded face-rippers that demonstrate Seabrook’s raison d’être: steamroll the listener into submission with extreme physicality.

Brutalovechamp is a different beast, and it affirms Seabrook’s boundary-smashing, prolific sensibility. He shows that he can dial down his signature free-for-all blasts of guitar notes and riffs, favoring a decidedly more subtle approach—at least for him.

Even though Seabrook’s Epic Proportions contains three members who helped fuel the dizzily complex and corrosive avant-metal mania of 2017’s Die Trommel Fatale, this new group has its own distinct voice. The record showcases a reshuffled ensemble that combines the players from Die Trommel Fatale (cellist Marika Hughes; contrabassist Eivind Opsvik; electronics and voice master Chuck Bettis; and drummer and multi-instrumentalist Sam Ospovat) with newcomers Nava Dunkelman (percussion, glockenspiel, voice), Henry Fraser (contrabass), and John McCowen (contrabass clarinet, Bb clarinet, alto and bass recorder).

The two records couldn’t be any more different, navigating opposite ends of the spectrum, both sonically and stylistically. Die Trommel Fatale had more in common with the sort of mythical black metal that Krallice squelches out, but filtered through the prism of punk jazz; brutalovechamp nods to 1970s, utopian folk rock meets Nels Cline’s boundless guitar heroics meets the polystylism made famous by 20th century composers like Alfred Schnittke. What culminates from this motley crew of influences is a meticulously pieced-together, intimate sprawl of blissed-out, proggy maelstroms alongside playfully eccentric stretches that place Seabook’s freakishly inventive compositional mettle at center stage.

In the album notes, Seabrook notes that he wrote the music that makes up brutalovechamp at a time when his “personal and artistic lives were in drastic flux.” Those feelings of uncertainty, hopelessness, and reflection are laid bare on the title track, a 10-minute-long tour de force worth the price of admission alone. The tranquil sound of McCowen’s alto recorder is the very first sound you hear on brutalovechamp before Seabrook’s enters the fray with an equally soothing picking of mandolin.

It isn’t long before the music goes full tilt, though. The aggro-prog twang Seabrook lets loose invokes the country-fried chugging of Meat Puppets II and Blood on the Tracks/Desire-era Dylan—if the latter were under the influence of free jazz and a good dose of speed. “I Wanna Be Chlorophylled I: Corpus Conductor” is cut from a similarly heady and bucolic cloth, driven into screeching overdrive by the three-pronged strings team of Hughes, Fraser, and Opsvik and Ospovat’s percussive fireworks. “The Perils of Self-Betterment” furthers Seabrook’s knack for mandolin shredding as Bettis puts his own stamp on the track with a splattering of electronics-fueled swirls and swooshes. Meanwhile, “Gutbucket Asylum” and “Compassion Montage,” powered by Bettis’s and Dunkelman’s demonic yelps, respectively, sound like carnival music from the depths of hell.

Sure, this may sound as if brutalovechamp is straight-up batshittery—and, indeed, some of it certainly retains the mangled guitar chaos for which Seabrook is notorious. But it’s also, arguably, his most laser-focused, melodic, and compact effort to date and one that provides a listening experience that is pure exhilaration and deeply meditative—due in large part to his Epic Proportions group, who help realize his vision. The newfound sense of patience and space produces an invitation to fully absorb all of the fine detail and otherworldly vernacular of Seabrook’s guitar wizardry.

Award-winning trombonist and composer Naomi Moon Siegel has “crafted a truly unique aesthetic, combining elements of straightahead, fusion and modern jazz with world-music flavors in a way that sounds entirely of the 21st century” (JAZZIZ). She is committed to exploring the trombone as a vehicle for sonic expression colored by breath, spit, and physicality. As a composer and bandleader, Siegel has released two albums to critical acclaim, Shoebox View on Break Open Records in 2016, and Live at Earshot on Slow and Steady Records in 2019. Her third album, produced by Siegel and Allison Miller, is slated to come out in 2024, drawing inspiration from themes such as climate change, grief, and joy.

With her self-released 3-CD set “A Life Soundtrack”, Marina Albero has composed an intimate biography in the musical languages of old Europe, modern Spain, 1990’s Cuba and the US of today. Comfortable in the syntax and idioms of baroque, flamenco, son and American jazz, Albero shares chapters on learning, love, loss, and life that will move and inspire you. Her musical story has been captivating audiences and musicians around the Northwest since she moved to Seattle in 2015.
